Big news and new things for Dreamcatcher members as April 2026 arrives for the group, one year after full group exclusive contracts ended.

One thing that I think people get concerned about (legitimately so) when K-Pop groups aren't actively contracted together anymore is the individual prospects of the members themselves. Fans get worried that members that are less popular than others might not have the same prospects, and when they don't see things moving forward, they get a bit more nervous.

Maybe in Dreamcatcher's case, that worry might be a bit warranted. After all, this is a group that plied their trade for years on a mostly international audience - one that has the ability to prop up a group sustainably, but which may have limited agency when it comes to domestic prospects, something that is of importance once in the post-exclusive contract era. Yet for all the fretting that folks have been doing over various Dreamcatcher members over the past year, the content generation, networking, and work being done seemed to point to everyone eventually finding their way, whether as part of a subunit, band, or solo. That's what we saw this past couple of weeks, so let's take a look!

Warning: The above video has an intense amount of strobing and flashing lights.

Ever since all-girl rock band Rolling Quartz stepped onto the scene six years ago with promotions for "Blaze", their head-banging, hard-charging style has had Dreamcatcher fans clamoring for some kind of collaboration. It obviously helped that both lead singer Jayoung and drummer Yeongeun had both released covers of Dreamcatcher songs ("BOCA", and "BEcause", respectively, being two such examples) and were prior fans of the group. The release of their cover of 2017 Dreamcatcher classic "GOOD NIGHT" was a nice teaser, but it never really materalized into anything simultaneously on-screen...that is, until a week ago.

Dreamcatcher and ChRocktikal Main Vocal Siyeon joined forces with Rolling Quartz to put out a new digital single, "Rolling The Dice", and the results, while long-awaited, were well worth it to fans. The song had the pop high energy of a classic Dreamcatcher song while having the hard rock and instrumentation necessary that has become Rolling Quartz's signature sound. The collaboration of vocals between both Siyeon and Jayoung made it sound like they fit together while also ensuring neither overpowered the other. It's a great song, and if the music video's strobing and lights bother you, you can always check it out on streaming platforms like Spotify. Whether it's with UAU, ChRocktikal, or, dare we dream about it, all of Dreamcatcher, now that the seal has been broken, so to speak, maybe we'll see more collaborations in the future.

It's been a bit since we saw a Dami video, but fans got a treat a few days ago when she posted up a wholesome girls' night with friends. I think one advantage of seeing individual members open up YouTube channels is that they tend to be a bit more personable with a more casual feel, and that's what this was for Dami and her friends. In the K-Pop artist world, where someone's outward image is heavily curated, it feels like it's important for artists to cling to their friend network where they let their hair down a bit, and that's what happened here. Of all the vlog content out there from Dreamcatcher members, Dami's Off the Record is becoming one of my favorites for its laid back feel, and I hope it continues.

Speaking of the vlogging front, we saw SuA drop in another video, this time about her skincare routine. It's obvious this is of utmost importance in the K-pop industry, but I'm always surprised at the sheer number of products and items designed for specific purposes. While this is very much "standard" content for a K-Pop artist's own channel, what makes these fun for me is that SuA always has a lot of personality and energy presenting the content. None of that should be as surprise from long-time Dreamcatcher fans as SuA has always been a variety standout, but I continue to be pleased she gets to spread her wings doing her own thing from a video standpoint.

Handong continues to be really busy back in China, with a ton of videos and content that unfortunately aren't as accessible to fans outside of the country (though some channels, such as Handong Cfans above, do their best to bring them to the international fanbase). We've seen Handong do fun little shorts, try out and promote some classic Scottish whiskey as a part of her work with "The Secretary" show, and of course, celebrate her birthday with fans. One thing that I think I appreciate about Handong is unafraid she is to embrace some of the comedic side of herself during these lives and videos, and the struggle to drink whiskey and suggest promotions, put up a video where she's mock-horrified to have turned 30, and mess around with fans in livestream chats are just a few examples. Besides all this, we recently got confirmation that Handong will appear again at the Strawberry Music Festival, this time now known as an artist signed by Modern Sky. That should be pretty expected given that it's the independent artist company's signature event in China, but it's nice to see they'll have Handong booked and busy for it.

Going back to how I started this article, being booked and busy at all is of concern to fans when groups and companies mutually decide not to all renew exclusive contracts, and for a while now, I think folks were a bit concerned about youngest member Gahyun's prospects. Though having a desire to get into acting, and taking a much needed months-long break to reset from the day-to-day of the idol life, folks wondered how well the effort to be signed was going. Though Gahyun has seemingly an extensive friend network in the idol space and she did do a few endorsement, collaborative, and fashion events here and there, getting into the acting world was always the end goal, and as other Dreamcatcher members put out content, fans wondered when Gahyun would get her turn at her next steps.

All of that speculation ended a couple weeks ago when the news dropped that Gahyun was signed by acting agency Hogirowoon Company, and that she'd finally be starting down her journey towards TV and movies. A quick search around turns up that the company's other signed actors have been in a few well-known series and films (Squid Games, The Good Detective, Jun & Jun, to name a few I dug up), so the company appears to be decently resourced. The requisite photoshoot and profile head shots were released, and Gahyun released a video on her own YouTube channel about prepping for the shoot and getting advice on routines to keep up her health and visual, which are obviously going to be important moving forward.

Gahyun, now known as Lee Seoyul, does a victory sign for the camera while smiling and wearing glasses in the city at night.

On top of that, and perhaps more seismic to fans, is that Gahyun is changing her stage name to reflect this new phase in her professional life. Swapping to the name Lee Seoyul, and wanting to be called and known by that name moving forward, is the second such name change for Dreamcatcher's youngest member since the romanization adjustment from Gahyeon to Gahyun (her apparent legal romanized name) in 2024. Unlike that change, however, this is a completely different name, and while she still lists both Seoyul and Gahyun in places, I'll be listing her as Seoyul moving forward due to her wishes.

Seoyul changing things up like this along with several other comments she's made about how she talks about Dreamcatcher as fond memories has spurred a lot of discourse in the community about the group's future prospects. There's some mild thoughts of this being confirmation, by people who have insisted since the beginning of the end of exclusive contracts last April, that the group is effectively disbanded and that they are "done", but I can't really agree entirely, for a variety of reasons.

First, name changes for acting are not unheard of when it comes to musical artists moving moves to the small or big screen. GFRIEND's Sowon swapped her name to Kim Sojung for acting, only to switch it up again to a hybrid of Kim Sowon later on. GOT7's Junior swapped to Jinyoung in part for acting purposes. EXID's Hani has used Ahn Heeyeon, her real name, when acting.

Secondly, I don't think this is definitive news that the group coming together to make music is never happening again. All three of the examples above eventually had group activities with their fellow members to some degree or another. Third generation groups in general, from Oh My Girl to MAMAMOO, have seen or are seeing a resurgence or a return to brief activity. And the idea of leaving the door open to group activity doesn't always mean indefinite hiatus, even if that is sometimes the outcome.

I think if your definition of group activity is the regularity of guaranteed comebacks, promotions, and work together in music, then I'd agree that Dreamcatcher as a whole will likely never return to that again. But to go a step further and say that there's never a chance? I don't know about that, even with Dreamcatcher members being successful to a certain degree doing their own thing. Every group's situation is unique and has factors. With how close Dreamcatcher appears to remain, with how supportive they are of one another (lots of it for Seoyul changing her name and signing with the company from her fellow Dreamcatcher members), and with nobody being so busy that the prospect of a group payday (even with a cut going to other companies) isn't appealing, I don't think it's wrong to leave the door cracked a bit for a group activity or two in the future.

No matter what happens, though, I've made peace with the fact that Dreamcatcher has had a good run, that they seem happy and content to be doing what they're doing, and that life takes us, and Dreamcatcher, in new and interesting directions, where we don't want to do the same thing forever. If that's not worth throwing your support behind, I don't know what is, but I know I'll be following along with the members of Dreamcatcher and reporting things to folks for a while yet.
