The thing that is most difficult to deal with when a K-Pop group enters that "post-exclusive contract era" like Dreamcatcher has is the uncertainty. Where will the members who've left sign (if they do) and what will they do? What will the remaining members do? Will the group ever perform all together again?

Questions like these are ones that I've discussed a lot with fellow fans, especially since April 1, when the number of members exclusively signed to Dreamcatcher Company went down from seven to four. Yet even during the original announcement in March, Dreamcatcher Company was quick to state future plans, one of which was that JiU, SuA, and Yoohyeon would be promoting as a subunit of the main group, revealed to be called "UAU" (or in hangul, μœ μ•„μœ , an assembly of one syllable of each member's name). Fans have been anticipating this project and new debut pretty highly, and this past week, we finally got onto the path to debut and new music. Here's what we learned!

Part of what fans were wondering was how the subunit would end up running pre-debut promotions. For eight years, fans have gotten used to Dreamcatcher's cryptic method of marketing before release, with a tradition of "mystery code" imagery that began with "Fly High" era and persisted all the way to "JUSTICE" in 2024, but aside from a fun exercise for signed polaroid prizes for the logo, nobody really knew what Dreamcatcher UAU would do, especially for debut.

Those questions were answered mid-week last week with a scheduler drop, confirming what would be the release date (late May, on the 28th), as well as the lead-up of what to look forward to in the meantime. There were no mystery codes and imagery showed a small table with a book about the zodiac and candles, and even more mysterious was the presence of a "?" event on the 21st.

The tone was set for a different method of promotion, and that was made even more apparent by the creation of and presence of an official Pinterest account, containing a bunch of imagery much like the platform is used for in terms of having "moodboards" or sets of pictures. The image sets seemed to have a mature, adult, and photorealistic theme, with JiU, SuA, and Yoohyeon seeming to depict a fun night out, celebrations, and relaxing drinks, all while in varying fashions.

And when the pre-order details dropped late in the week, giving fans a first peek at the album designs and style, this theme seemed to continue. Where the main Dreamcatcher group's calling cards were fantastical worlds that played out over multiple album releases with elements of good and evil, UAU appeared, at least from what we've seen so far, to be more grounded in reality with a more simple design and a curious focus on drinks.

There's been small debate about the quality of this based on what we've seen, and the way I like to think about it is A)we haven't seen all of the pre-release stuff yet, especially the music, which I find to be most important and B)I support the idea of subunits having distinct identity separate from the main group. Dreamcatcher has its own distinct style and vibe, and many fans, including me, were drawn to them because of that.

But for those who might not be as wowed by this approach by UAU, I would remind them that over the past eight years of Dreamcatcher, we've seen many glimpses of different presentations by members and subunits, most notably in the 2022 Apocalypse: Save Us album featuring distinct solos by each member. The group's versatility in genre has been part of why I've liked them, so seeing them do something different to give the subunit its own identity both respects the main group's distinct brand and style while also showing off something new and different. I'm reserving judgment til everything is out, but I have a feeling that because I've liked much of Dreamcatcher's B-side and solo special clip items, that I'll like UAU's music, too.

That said, some things are bound to stay the same, and SuA turned on Instagram live for the first time in a while to tell fans that their fandom name will remain InSomnia, as the subunit is derived from the main Dreamcatcher group. UAU is deep in final preparations, confirmed in part by SuA saying during this live that she recorded something as recently as the day she broadcast, so all that pre-release hype is certainly building.

Yet there are clearly things that build that hype that will be different, and a special offline listening event is one of these. Five days before release, and in collaboration with a local business, Amazing Beer Company, to give out limited UAU beer (or cider for minors), this is something Dreamcatcher Company has never done before, and it definitely wasn't on my list of potential collabs, either. Amazing Beer Company has a limited list of collaborations they've showcased, so I'm curious if the "UAU beer/cider" will end up here.

Either way, it's just another way in which UAU is setting themselves apart as its own unique identity. If you want a specific example from another girl group, it's much like WJSN The Black ("Easy") and WJSN Chocome ( "Super Yuppers!") did with their releases, setting themselves apart from the main group's more fantasy/cosmic/ethereal style ("Save Me Save You"). This week will bring more images in the form of individual and group teasers, so we'll likely see more of what UAU is thinking of showing fans.

Finally, while a lot of the focus has been on UAU this past week, it's not like the other members of Dreamcatcher haven't been active, either. Each one posted a bit of media for fans on Instagram, with Dami filming another dancing reel with more of her friends, Siyeon posting some fun and random beach pictures and being her traditional quirky Siyeon self doing so, Gahyun doing a brief photoshoot against a green background that highlighted her dark hair, and Handong catching up on a picture trend that also had a special feline guest to go with it. While we have yet to hear about solid work plans for Dreamcatcher's non-UAU members, we're still pretty early in, and it's just fine for everyone to proceed at their own pace. I'll be awaiting news on this, UAU's official road to debut, so for all that and more, I'll see you here next time!
